Are you familiar with the term "personal anthropology"? It refers to your world view and its impact on how you show up, with yourself and with others. It's the narrative of the stories we tell ourselves, our core beliefs.
Here's a little exercise to get you started.
+ Make a list of your core beliefs, for example, the world is a safe place or a scary place, people are either for me or against me, things generally go well for me or they don't...
+ Consider whether your "story" is going to take you where you want to go in life.
+ What might you need to revise in order to get the results you want?
+ What limiting beliefs are holding you back?
+ When's the last time you really went for something?
About The Process
Clearly, the "process" piece of the puzzle is far less important than the "results" piece. However, plenty of people ask, "How does coaching work?", so here's an overview.
Coaching is about discovery, awareness and choice. As a coach, I help my clients discover what would truly make a meaningful difference to them and develop the skills to integrate that into their life. Through gaining awareness of the obstacles, both inner and outer, that are keeping them from being where they want to be, they make better choices. And, by identifying and focusing on their strengths, these innate gifts and talents can be put into action in achieving their goals.
Initially there is a “discovery session” which includes orientation and self-discovery work. In building the foundation for the coaching process, we begin the work of clarifying your values (what is important to you) and goals (how you define success). Together, we come up with a plan. Each session ends with specific next steps to move you towards your objectives.
The coaching process involves equal measures of partnership and accountability. As your coach, my role is to guide and support you toward the fulfillment of goals you have established during the discovery session. Exercises and/or assignments are part of the plan. These may be completed before the next session, or in some cases may be on-going, depending on what has emerged during the goal-setting and discovery sessions.
Accountability is a crucial element of the process. As your coach, I will hold you accountable to meet the goals you have set for yourself. Without it, there can be little momentum.
Life coaching is not therapy. Whether you are seeking to improve one area of your life or several, life coaching can help you not only achieve your goals but also learn to make strong, life-affirming choices. It's really about empowerment. And, it's a blast! Clients report loving the process, particularly the opportunity to get into conversations they would otherwise not ever have.
As for the actual structure, coaching sessions take place in person or by phone. A typical arrangement is a one hour session, either two or three times per month.
